Honey Questions
My honey crystallized. Did it go bad?
Not at all! Crystallization is a natural characteristic of raw honey and is actually a sign that your honey has been minimally processed.
To return it to a liquid state, place the jar in warm water or a crockpot on the lowest setting. Avoid microwaving if you'd like to preserve the naturally occurring enzymes and beneficial properties found in raw honey.
How long does honey last?
Pure honey has an incredibly long shelf life when stored properly. Keep it tightly sealed and stored at room temperature.
Why does one jar taste different from another?
Honey is a natural product that reflects where the bees were foraging. Weather, blooms, and seasons all influence flavor, color, and aroma, making every harvest a little unique.
Is your honey raw?
Yes. Our honey is raw and unfiltered and produced by our own beehives right here in Nebraska.
What's the difference between raw honey and grocery store honey?
Not all honey is created equal.
Our honey is gently strained to remove natural hive debris such as bits of wax, but it is never ultra-filtered. To make bottling possible, we may gently warm our honey, but never beyond temperatures naturally found inside a healthy beehive.
Many large-scale commercial honeys found on grocery store shelves are heavily filtered and heated during processing. Ultra-filtration can remove much of the pollen naturally found in honey, making it difficult to determine where the honey originated. Heating can help create a uniform product and delay crystallization, but it may also alter some of the delicate flavors and natural characteristics that make honey unique.
At Fat Head Honey Farms, we prefer to keep things simple. Our honey comes from our own bees in northeast Nebraska, is gently strained, carefully bottled, and handled as little as possible from hive to jar.
Do you sell honeycomb?
Yes! Honeycomb is available seasonally while supplies last. Availability can vary from year to year depending on weather conditions and the honey crop.
Shopping & Ordering
Do you ship?
Yes! We ship honey and other products throughout the United States directly from our farm.
I can't make it to the farm. Do you sell in stores?
Yes! You can find Fat Head Honey products at a growing number of retail locations throughout Nebraska and beyond. Visit our “store locator” page for the most up-to-date list of locations.
Do you offer wholesale?
Yes! We partner with coffee shops, restaurants, bakeries, farm stores, gift shops, and specialty retailers. Just email queenbee@fatheadhoney.com for more information.
Can I buy honey in bulk?
We offer select bulk honey options for businesses and qualifying customers. Contact us for current availability and pricing.
Can I return my empty honey jars?
At this time, we do not accept returned jars. Food safety regulations require us to use new containers for all honey products.
That said, we love seeing jars given a second life! Customers have used them as drinking glasses, flower vases, pantry storage containers, candle holders, propagation jars, picnic containers, and countless other creative projects.
My package arrived damaged. What should I do?
Please contact us as soon as possible and include photos of the damaged package and products. We'll work with you to make it right.
Farm Stand & Visiting
What are your Farm Stand hours?
The Farm Stand is typically open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Seasonal hours, special events, and holiday openings are announced on our social media pages.
How does the Farm Stand work?
Our Farm Stand operates on the honor system. Simply make your selections, fill out a receipt, and pay using cash, check, or Venmo.
Can we taste honey before buying?
Absolutely! Our tasting bar is stocked with rotating honey varieties so you can discover your favorites before taking a jar home.
Do I need a reservation to visit?
No reservation is needed during normal Farm Stand hours.
Can I bring my dog?
Unfortunately, no. While we love dogs, we ask that pets stay home. Our farm is home to free-range animals, working bee yards, and livestock, and outside pets can create stress and safety concerns for both animals and visitors.
Do you have restrooms?
During our busiest season, a portable restroom is available for visitors. Please note that we do not have indoor public restrooms on the farm.
Do you offer guided tours?
We do not offer formal guided tours. Guests are welcome to explore the farm at their own pace using our self-guided map and educational QR codes located throughout the property.
Bees & Beekeeping
Are the bees going to sting me?
Honeybees are generally focused on gathering nectar and pollen, but stings are always possible when visiting a working farm. We recommend giving hives plenty of space and watching where you step and sit. Grab a bee veil located at the farmstand for safety & selfies.
Can I visit your bee yards & production facilities?
For the safety of both visitors and bees, our production bee yards and facilities are not open to the public.
Can you speak at our school, club, or event?
We are honored by the requests we receive, but as a small family-run farm, we're unable to accommodate most speaking engagements, tours, and group presentations.
If we missed something, don't hesitate to reach out.
Whether you're planning your first visit, trying a new honey flavor, or wondering why your jar crystallized, we're always happy to help when we can.
Thanks for supporting local beekeepers and small family farms.
See you at the Farm Stand!
